That is exactly where Sri Lanka’s construction industry finds itself today. After the economic slowdown, work is picking up again. But we are short of trained hands. Right now, there are around 10,000 vacancies, and experts are warning of a 20,000 worker shortfall by the end of 2026 (Seneviratne, 2026). Several large companies have already asked for permission to bring in 7,500 foreign workers to fill the immediate gap.
